“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” -- That’s what the (female) statue in Emma Lazarus’s 1883 poem “The New Colossus” said.  Emma wrote the poem for an auction that raised money for the pedestal of the new Statue of Liberty.  In the sonnet, the statue cries out from “silent lips,” welcoming the world’s exiles to her land.  The poem now graces Lady Liberty herself.
